The Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada continues the series of introductory catechetical courses in the biblical-theological field, in the history, spirituality and worship of the Orthodox Church.

The need for faith to well discern

the work of God in our lives and the Church

At the beginning of the ecclesiastical new year the Church invite us to pray “that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2, 2). The beginning of the Church year is a renewed occasion in which to remember the good order of our personal life but also of the public life. One without another does not really exist. Without a personal life in good order we cannot have a community, a society, living peacefully and having a life in good order because we cannot establish friendships or stable and sound personal relationships. But also, a well -ordered social life can help a troublesome person to take note and to correct the improper things in her life by seeing the examples and order of others.

The basis of this good personal and social, community order is the result of faith. St. Paul says: “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all (…)” (1 Timothy 2, 5-6). The good order of someone’s life has its source in a clear and transparent faith from which the values ​​that will be reflected in daily life in society springs.

There is first for the Christian a sure, transcendent reality, – God. There have been other times and other systems of faith, but what is specific to the Christian faith is the uniqueness of God. God is one and this means a unity of vision and thinking as people.

Harmony and coherence as persons and society involves a unique foundation, which means faith in one God. Faith in God was also one of the essential elements by which the Christian faith was convincing in the face of pagan polytheism. From this faith in the unity and uniqueness of the Christian God, the unmeasurable value of man and the world created by Him also springs. Man is the only one created in the image and resemblance of God, ‘an absolute immanent’ that reflects over time the absolute infinity of the intemporal and transcendent God. Our stature, the one with which we are born and grow in the Church, is a human one transfigured by grace. Our duty of Christians is to transfigure our lives through the force of God’s grace.

In concrete way it comes through the direct work of our mediator to God who is Jesus Christ. Through His perfect sacrifice He offer Himself to the Father in order to renew us. That is why our way of working our renewal and transfiguration cannot be done otherwise than according to the model and the grace of the work of Christ.

St. Paul says that all are allowed to man but not all are useful. All is possible to man, but it does not need everything. For everything that is not based on the faith in the One God and the unique mediating work of Christ is not useful. The benefit is viewed in Christian understanding as the actions a person takes to grow spiritually and morally in alignment with God’s plan. True usefulness is found in activities and endeavors that are rooted in this spiritual foundation.

The temptation is the ease of selfish choice and the illusory fascination of self-divinisation, the belief that we can replace God with our own limited understanding, thinking and deed. It is the temptation in which the first man fell: “You will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3, 5).

That is why the Church at the beginning of the year invites us all to address prayers to God because this reminds us who we are and lays our lives on the true and eternal foundation – that is, the Word of God. This is our right identity, that of creature of God meant to reflect its Creator.

Each beginning of the ecclesiastical year, every moment of prayer, every Holy Liturgy or every Holy Sacrament, each demand addressed to God, is an exercise in humility that reminds us and possibly brings us back to the true living in God. This should be the target of everything we do – life in God. From this we understand what is useful to us and what is not.

We see in our contemporary world much violence, wickedness and lie. Let us grow and overcome everything evil with the help of the grace of God by kindness, love, faith, hope and harmony. Let us become a single body of Christ to work on the acquisition of the eternal kingdom and the salvation of all. Let us not be overcome by wickedness and chaos. Let the light, the joy and the blessing of God protect us and penetrate us to the depths of our deepest being in order to feel the synergic work of God that will be in our personal and social life.

Let us not remain silent in the face of injustices, ideologies of modern times, lie, persecutions of any kind, of any kind of teaching that leads to the spiritual and human impoverishment of the person. The work of Christ and the Church is that of transfiguring the human nature through divine grace and glory.

Christ urges us: “ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. (…) Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5; 44-45, 48).

Let us embrace everybody with love and unlimited divine embracing. Let us fill our souls and life with sacrificial, redeeming, and boundless love of Christ in order to be able to resemble to Him more and more. That’s how the older or the newer saints have done. Let’s follow their way and life, words and deeds. Let us be disciples worthy of the example they offered.

At this beginning of the ecclesiastical New Year I wish everyone – clergy and believers – grace, joy and blessing from God and from us humble prayer.

Nevoia credinței pentru a bine discerne

lucrarea lui Dumnezeu în viața noastră și a Bisericii

La început de an nou bisericesc Biserica îndeamnă la rugăciune “ca să ducem viață pașnică și liniștită în toată cuvioșia și buna-cuviință” (1 Timotei 2, 2). Începutul anului bisericesc este o ocazie reînnoită în care să ne aducem aminte de buna rânduială a vieții noastre personale dar și a celei obștești. Una fără alta nu există. Fără o viață personală în bună rânduială nu putem avea o viață comunitară, de societate, în pace și bună rânduială pentru că nu putem lega prietenii sau stabili relații personale stabile și temeinice. Dar și viață socială bine rânduită poate ajuta persoana în neorânduială să ia aminte și să îndrepte lucrurile necuvenite din viața ei văzând exemplele și rânduiala celorlalți.

Baza acestei bune rânduieli personale și sociale, comunitare, este rezultatul credinței. Sf. Ap. Pavel spune: “Căci unul este Dumnezeu, unul este și Mijlocitorul între Dumnezeu şi oameni: omul Hristos Iisus, Care S-a dat pe Sine preț de răscumpărare pentru toți (…)” (1 Timotei 2, 5-6). Buna rânduială își are izvorul într-o credință clară și limpede din care izvorăsc valorile care se vor reflecta în viața de zi cu zi în societate.

Există mai întâi pentru creștin o realitate sigură, transcendentă, – Dumnezeu. Au existat și alte timpuri și alte sisteme de credință dar ceea ce este specific credinței creștine este unicitatea lui Dumnezeu. Dumnezeu este Unul iar aceasta înseamnă o unitate de viziune și gândire a noastră ca persoane.

Armonia și coerența noastră ca persoane și societate presupune o temelie unică, care înseamnă credința într-un singur Dumnezeu. Credința în Dumnezeu Unul a fost și unul din elementele esențiale prin care credința creștină a fost convingătoare în fața politeismului păgân. Din această credință în unitatea și unicitatea Dumnezeului creștin izvorăște nemăsurata valoare a omului și a lumii create de El. Omul este singurul creat după chipul și asemănarea lui Dumnezeu ‘un absolut imanent’ care reflectă în timp infinitatea absolută a lui Dumnezeu netemporal și transcendent. Statura noastră, cea cu care ne naștem și creștem în Biserică, este una umană transfigurată de har. Datoria noastră de creștini este să transfigurăm viața noastră prin puterea harului lui Dumnezeu.

În chip concret acesta vine prin lucrarea directă a Mijlocitorului nostru către Dumnezeu care este Iisus Hristos. Prin jertfa Sa desăvârșită El S-a dăruit Tatălui pentru noi în vederea înnoirii noastre. De aceea și felul nostru de a lucra înnoirea și transfigurarea noastră nu se poate face altfel decât după modelul și prin puterea lucrării lui Hristos.

Sf. Ap. Pavel spune că toate îi sunt îngăduite omului dar nu toate îi sunt de folos. Toate îi sunt posibile omului, dar nu are nevoie de toate. Căci tot ceea ce nu are la bază credința în Dumnezeul Cel Unul și lucrarea mijlocitoare unică a lui Hristos nu-i sunt acestuia de folos. Folosul este văzut în înțelegerea creștină ca ceea ce omul face spre creșterea lui duhovnicească și umană în conformitatea cu planul lui Dumnezeu. Nu poate fi nimic cu adevărat folositor decât ceea ce se întâmplă sau este clădit în acest spirit.

Ispita este ușurința alegerii egoiste și fascinația iluzorie a auto-divinizării, a credinței că-l putem înlocui pe Dumnezeu cu înțelegerea, gândirea și fapta noastră proprie limitată. Este ispita în care au căzut primii oameni: ‘veți fi ca Dumnezeu, cunoscând binele și răul’ (Facere 3, 5).

De aceea Biserica la început de an ne invită pe toți să adresăm rugăciuni către Dumnezeu căci acest lucru ne aduce aminte cine suntem și ne așază viața pe temelia cea adevărată și veșnică – adică Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu. Este locul cuvenit nouă, adică acela de creatură a lui Dumnezeu menită să reflecte în mijlocul creației pe Creatorul ei.

Fiecare început de an, fiecare moment de rugăciune, fiecare Sfântă Liturghie sau fiecare Sfântă Taină săvârșită, fiecare cererea adresată lui Dumnezeu, este un exercițiu de smerenie care ne reamintește și eventual ne readuce în suflet trăirea adevărată a vieții în Dumnezeu. Aceasta să ne fie ținta a tot ceea ce facem – viața în Dumnezeu. Din aceasta să înțelegem ceea ce ne este de folos și ceea nu ne este.

Vedem în lumea noastră contemporană multă violență, răutate și minciună. Să sporim și să biruim cu ajutorul lucrării harului lui Dumnezeu prin bunătate, dragoste, credință, nădejde și armonie. Să devenim un singur trup al lui Hristos care să lucreze la dobândirea Împărăției veșnice și mântuirii tuturor. Să nu ne lăsăm biruiți de răutate și haos. Lumina, bucuria și binecuvântarea lui Dumnezeu să ne ocrotească și să ne pătrundă până în adâncul ființei noastre celei mai profunde pentru a simți acolo lucrarea sinergică a lui Dumnezeu care să se reverse în viața noastră personală și socială.

Să nu rămânem tăcuți în fața nedreptăților, a ideologiilor timpurilor moderne, a minciunii, a persecuțiilor de orice natură, a oricărui fel de învățătură care duce la sărăcirea spirituală și umană a persoanei. Lucrarea lui Hristos și a Bisericii este aceea de transfigurare a firii omenești prin intermediul harului și slavei dumnezeiești.

Hristos ne îndeamnă: “Iar Eu zic vouă: Iubiți pe vrăjmașii voștri, binecuvântați pe cei ce vă blestemă, faceți bine celor ce vă urăsc și rugați-vă pentru cei ce vă vatămă și vă prigonesc, ca să fiți fiii Tatălui vostru Celui din ceruri, că El face să răsară soarele și peste cei răi și peste cei buni și trimite ploaie peste cei drepți și peste cei nedrepți. (…) Fiți, dar, voi desăvârșiți, precum Tatăl vostru Cel ceresc desăvârșit este” (Matei 5; 44-45, 48)

Să-i îmbrățișăm pe toți cu iubire și îmbrățișare dumnezeiască nemărginită. Să ne umplem sufletele și viața de dragostea jertfelnică, răscumpărătoare și fără de margini a lui Hristos pentru a ne putea asemăna din ce în ce mai mult cu ceea ce El este. Așa au făcut și sfinții mai vechi sau mai noi. Să le urmăm calea și viața, cuvintele și faptele. Să le fim ucenici vrednici de exemplul pe care l-au oferit.  

La acest început de an nou bisericesc urez tuturor – cler și credincioși – har, bucurie și binecuvântare de la Dumnezeu iar de la noi smerită rugăciune.

La nécessité de la foi pour bien discerner

l’œuvre de Dieu dans nos vies et dans l’Église

Au début du Nouvel An ecclésiastique, l’Église exhorte à la prière “afin que nous puissions mener une vie paisible et tranquille, en toute piété et en tout respect.” (1 Timothée 2, 2). Le début de l’année ecclésiastique est une occasion renouvelée pour se souvenir du bon ordre de notre vie personnelle mais aussi sociale. L’une sans l’autre n’existe pas. Sans une vie personnelle en bon ordre, nous ne pouvons pas avoir une communauté, une société, une vie paisible et établie parce que nous ne pouvons pas lier des amitiés ou établir des relations personnelles stables et solides. Mais aussi une vie sociale bien organisée peut aider une personne désorganisée à prendre conscience de sa condition et à essayer de réviser les choses dans sa vie en voyant les exemples et la bonne organisation des autres.

La base de ce bon ordre personnel et social communautaire est le résultat de la foi. Saint-Paul dit: “En effet, il y a un seul Dieu et il y a aussi un seul médiateur entre Dieu et les hommes: l’homme, Jésus-Christ, qui s’est donné lui-même en rançon pour tous (…)” (1 Timothée 2, 5-6). La bonne ordonnance de la vie a sa source dans une foi claire et transparente à partir de laquelle les valeurs qui se refléteront dans la vie quotidienne dans la société surgissent.

Il y a d’abord pour le chrétien une réalité sûre et transcendante, – Dieu. Il y a eu d’autres moments et d’autres systèmes de croyances, mais ce qui est spécifique à la foi chrétienne est le caractère unique de Dieu. Dieu est Un et cela signifie une unité de vision et de pensée pour les personnes humaines.

L’harmonie et la cohérence en tant que personnes et en tant que société impliquent une base unique, c’est-à-dire la foi en un seul Dieu. La foi en un seul Dieu était également l’un des éléments essentiels par lesquels la foi chrétienne était convaincante face au polythéisme païen. De cette foi dans l’unité et l’unicité du Dieu chrétien naît la valeur incommensurable de l’homme et du monde qu’Il a créé. L’homme est le seul créé à l’image et à la ressemblance de Dieu « un immanent absolu » qui reflète au fil du temps l’infini absolu du Dieu éternel et transcendant. Notre stature, celle avec laquelle nous sommes nés et grandissons dans l’église, est une humanité transfigurée par la grâce. Notre devoir des chrétiens est de transfigurer nos vies à travers la puissance de la grâce de Dieu.

De manière concrète, cela passe par l’œuvre directe de notre médiateur envers Dieu qui est Jésus-Christ. Grâce à Son sacrifice parfait, qu’Il a offert à Dieu le Père, Il nous renouvèle. C’est pourquoi notre façon de travailler notre renouvellement et notre transfiguration ne peut pas être effectuée autrement que selon le modèle et la grâce de l’œuvre du Christ.

St. Paul dit que tout est permis à l’homme mais pas tout n’est utile. Tout est possibles pour l’homme, mais il n’a pas besoin de tout. Tout ce qui n’est pas basé sur la foi en un seul Dieu et l’œuvre médiatrice unique du Christ ne lui est pas utile. Dans la conception chrétienne, le bienfait est considéré comme l’ensemble des actions entreprises par une personne pour grandir spirituellement et moralement en accord avec le plan de Dieu. La véritable utilité se trouve dans les activités et les efforts qui sont enracinés dans ce fondement spirituel.

La tentation est la facilité du choix égoïste et la fascination illusoire de l’auto-divinisation, la croyance que nous pouvons remplacer Dieu par notre propre compréhension, pensée et actes limités. C’est la tentation dans laquelle les premiers hommes sont tombés: « Vous serez comme Dieu: vous connaîtrez le bien et le mal » (Genèse 3, 5).

C’est pourquoi l’Église au début de l’année ecclésiale nous invite tous à élever des prières à Dieu parce que cela nous rappelle qui nous sommes et renvoie nos vies à la base vraie et éternelle – c’est-à-dire la Parole de Dieu. C’est cela notre vraie identité, c’est-à-dire d’être la créature de Dieu destinée à refléter Son Créateur.

Chaque début d’année ecclésiastique, chaque instant de prière, chaque Sainte Liturgie ou chaque Saint Sacrament, chaque priere adressée à Dieu, est un exercice d’humilité qui nous rappelle et nous ramène à la vraie vie en Dieu. Cela devrait être la cible de tout ce que nous faisons – la vie en Dieu. De cela, nous comprenons ce qui nous est utile et ce qui ne l’est pas.

Nous voyons dans notre monde contemporain beaucoup de violence, de méchanceté et de mensonge. Croissons et surmontons avec l’aide de la grâce de Dieu tout le mal par la bonté, l’amour, la foi, l’espoir et l’harmonie. Devenons un seul corps de Christ à travailler sur l’acquisition du Royaume éternel et le salut de tous. Ne nous laissons pas vaincus par la méchanceté et le chaos. Laissons la lumière, la joie et la bénédiction de Dieu nous protéger et descendre aux profondeurs de notre être afin de ressentir l’œuvre synergique de Dieu qui va œuvrer dans notre vie personnelle et sociale.

Ne restons pas silencieux face aux injustices, aux idéologies des temps modernes, au mensonge, aux persécutions de toute sorte, devant tout sort d’enseignement qui mène à l’appauvrissement spirituel et humain de la personne. L’œuvre du Christ et de l’Église est celle de transfigurer la nature humaine par la grâce et la gloire divine.

Christ nous exhorte: “Mais Moi Je vous dis: Aimez vos ennemis, bénissez ceux qui vous maudissent, faites du bien à ceux qui vous détestent et priez pour ceux qui vous maltraitent et qui vous persécutent, afin d’être les fils de votre Père céleste. En effet, Il fait lever le soleil sur les méchants et sur les bons, et Il fait pleuvoir sur les justes et sur les injustes. (…) Soyez donc parfaits comme votre Père céleste est parfait » (Matthieu 5; 44-45, 48).

Embrassons-les tous avec un amour et une étreinte divine illimitée. Remplissons notre âme et notre vie de l’amour sacrificiel, rédempteur et sans limites du Christ afin de pouvoir nous ressembler de plus en plus. C’est ce qu’on fait les saints plus anciens ou les nouveaux saints. Suivions leur chemin et leur vie, leurs paroles et leurs actions. Soyons des disciples dignes de l’exemple qu’ils ont offert.

À ce début de la nouvelle année ecclésiastique, je souhaite à tous – clergé et fidèles – grâce, joie et bénédiction de Dieu et de nous une humble prière.
